Since the early days of spaceflight, space near the Earth has become more and more crowded with active satellites and passive space debris. In order to maintain safe operations in space, we need a good understanding of the space environment and the objects therein. This is the aim of the field of Space Situational Awareness (SSA). Within this field, Airbus Defence and Space is developing innovative technologies for Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST).
Real-world data for this endeavour is collected by the Airbus Robotic Telescope (ART), which performs surveillance and tracking observations of satellites and debris. The data is processed by the Airbus software framework SPOOK. Your job is to use and improve these tools to contribute to this research effort. In particular, you will focus on the analysis of the real-world data generated by ART.

Your tasks and responsibilities

Familiarization with the topic of SSA, the Airbus Robotic Telescope (ART) and the existing code (SPOOK).

Literature review on space situational awareness.

Implementation, testing and validation of new functions and tools.

Regular presentation of progress.

Preparation of a Master Thesis and thorough documentation of the work performed.
Desired skills and qualifications
-
Enrolled full time Master student in space or aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, automation engineering, physics, mathematics, software engineering or related fields.

Experience in programming (in particular Python).

Strong communicative skills and positive attitude towards teamwork.

Fluent English.

Interest in Space Situational Awareness topics and space debris mitigation.

Knowledge in orbital mechanics, optics, image processing and/or estimation theory is a plus.
